‘A Death In The Gunj’ is chosen as the opening film for the 18th Mumbai Film Festival.The movie is a drama thriller written and directed by Konkona Sen Sharma ,her debut at direction and is set to release in Indian theaters on 13 January 2017.
The movie is inspired on a short story by the director’s father, the science fiction writer and journalist Mukul Sharma. The movie starcast includes Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Gulshan Devaiah, Vikrant Massey, Tanuja and Jim Sarbh.
It is set in McCluskieganj, a former Anglo-Indian settlement in Jharkhand around winters of 1979 .It starts off with a happy family outing which takes an unexpected turn, when the guests start playing with spirits that leads to disappearance and death of one of the guests.It is a science fiction fantasy, a murder mystery.
Mukul Sharma’s, her father mentioned that it is fictionalised retelling of an incident revolving around a séance that actually took place at his parents’ house in McCluskieganj around 1980s. Since there was no internet etc the crowd decided for some mischief and they also tried holding a séance which was popular in those year with people .People are always curious about death and afterlife, and it is this strange thought with death that makes people to enjoy and carry out such experiments.
